Welcome to the wonderful world of companion parrots © By Garry Lee Published in Australian Avi-Trader February/March 2001 Introduction to Companion Parrots Companion parrots are one of the most exciting and comforting creatures that can come into our lives and homes. They provide for us so much in the way of happiness, joy and companion ship with their cheerful or some times noisy voices. The thrill and over whelming joy that we feel when they utter their first muffled word that some times sounds like a scratchy record. With much anticipation on our part, and practicing by them it forms into, "Hello" "Pretty boy" "Give me kissey", or what ever else that we have been trying to teach our newest member of the family to say. When bonding has taken place between you and your companion parrot it is truly like magic, that special feeling that you have for Peter, Polly, Mokka or what ever you have named you new mate. Passing the cage you call its name, it looks up and excitedly moved towards the front of the cage wanting to be with you, maybe it even responds by talking. With a smile on your face you can not resist the temptation to reach down, undo the latch and take him out for the cuddle that he relishes. At Parrot haven Aviary we have this wonderful experience every day of the week while hand feeding, nurturing and educating companion parrots for their new mums and dads. How do I find my feathered companion? Pet Stores Although many bird owners refuse to buy birds in pet stores, there are a number of reputable bird stores where you can purchase a healthy, well-adjusted companion parrot. You will probably get better information at a store that specialises in birds. Bird Sales Not very often do you come across genuine hand reared companion parrots. You have an increased risk of infectious diseases at bird sales since hundreds, even thousands, of birds from various breeders are all brought into the same airspace. If you purchase your companion parrot here be sure that you have it checked out by an Avian Veterinarian. Back yard breeders. Dedicated back yard breeders who have the time to spend feeding their baby parrots from before their eyes are opened, working with them, and educating them in the ways of a companion parrot are worth looking at. Unfortunately a lot of back yard breeders do not have the dedication, time or experience needed to produce a quality companion parrot. Specialist breeders. Specialist companion breeders are one of the best places to purchase companion parrots from. They work with the babies every day of the week as a full time occupation. The time, dedication and expense to do this tedious work correctly is a good indication of the feeling that they have towards their young companion parrots. Most specialist breeders usually work about 18 hours a day seven days a week. At Parrot Haven Aviary we also give a written guarantee with each of our companion parrots Your requirements. Purchasing a companion parrot requires a considerable financial investment and is a life long commitment to provide companionship and care. Make sure you are up to the challenge of owning a parrot before you purchase one. Once the decision is made to buy a parrot, you need to make the best possible choice to ensure that the relationship is a rewarding one for both you and the bird. Purchase your bird from a source, which has given your bird the right start in life. Do your best to ensure that it is a healthy, secure and well-socialised bird. Finding a "quality" breeder or pet store can help you avoid a bad experience. Do not buy just on price alone. Price should not be the mitigating factor in determining whom to purchase your bird from. Get as much specific information as you can about the breeder and the bird that you are interested in. This information should also be recorded and be given to your vet during the initial exam. Handfeeding, specialist equipment, vaccinations and veterinarian care, training and socialisation all add to the cost of raising a healthy well-adjusted baby companion parrot. A "bargain" bird may cost you more in the long run when unexpected behavioural or medical problems occur. Weaning Purchase a weaned baby from a place of business that does not sell unweaned babies to inexperienced people. These types of businesses are more interested in the dollar than the welfare of their birds. If they do not care who purchases their birds then in all probability they do not care about their birds either. Make sure your bird was not forced weaned early and that they used the "Abundance Weaning Concept." Visiting the bird during weaning will give you the opportunity to contribute to the bird's socialisation, and give you time to get to know your bird, and to learn how to take care of him/her. At Parrot Haven Aviary we send pictures of your new baby via an email.
