(Pyrrhura molinae molinae)

Description:

Parrot Haven Aviary breeders of Green Cheeked Conures Physical Description:
The Green Cheek looks similar to the Maroon Bellied Conure. The Green Cheek have an olive green body and wings (navy feathers at the end of their wings), and a maroon tail. Their head is dark and their throats are gray-green with flecks of green. They are also very quiet even when they scream (compared to my other conures).

They make excellent companion parrots and are ideal for people living in apartment blocks or areas where the keeping of noisy parrots can be a problem. Youngsters are generally of a much paler colouration overall.

Length:
26 cm (10")

Origin:
South America

Sexing:
Indeterminable by appearance, and must be surgically or DNA sexed to determine the sex of the bird. Most professional breeders including us at Parrot Haven Aviary, have our Green-cheeked Conures DNA sexed. The DNA sexing is very accurate and eliminates invasive examination of the parrot.

Housing:

The cage for your Conure needs to be as large as your space and budget allows. Minimum size should be at least 18 x 18 x 22. Perches should be of various sizes and shapes to allow some variety for your bird's feet. A large door in the front will allow your bird to be easily picked up while in his cage. A nest box inside the cage is a necessity for all Conures both young or old. Day and night they use for their sleeping quarters, providing a safe haven where they can retreat to and feel safe and secure. Your bird will also appreciate toys in his cage. Choose them with an eye to safety - remember that your bird is banded and watch out for "band catching" toys."

Loudness:

The Green Cheek can be loud, but nowhere near as loud as their Aritanga counterparts.

Trainability:

The Green Cheek is a playful bird, and is very trainable. Some people say that the Green Cheek can get 'nippy' in it's older age, but many others dispute that.

Licence Requirement:

In Australia an exotic bird licence is required to keep a Green-cheeked Conure. Some states within Australia will not allow the keeping of these birds. Check with the appropriate authority in your state before considering a Green-cheeked Conure as a companion or breeding bird.

Named "Jack" (Jack  Hammer) because of the rapid movement of her head when feeding from the spoon.
