Parrot Haven Aviary breeders of Conures

Conures are essentially Macaws in miniature, with their lively dispositions, individuals quickly become tame and will quickly gain a great deal of confidence in their owner, provided they are treated with respect. Although their powers of mimicry  are not as well developed as those of other South American parrots they will frequently learn to repeat a few words.

Conures vary greatly in size, price, and availability. Members of the Aratinga group are generally far more readily available to aviculturists than the Pyrrhuras and are consequently less expensive. Some may regard the general lack of bright coloration displayed by many Conures as an impediment to their successful establishment as a foremost choice among breeders (most species are predominantly green.)

However, individual species, such as the Queen of Bavaria's, Patagonian and Jandaya, with their flamboyant appearances, more than make up for the shortcomings of their duller brethren . With their fiery yellow plumage, the Sun Conure is one of the most spectacular members of the parrot family, although only in flight is its true beauty revealed.

The Aratingas range in size from 14 inches (36cm) down to 7 inches (18 cm); they are invariably light green in colour, with various colour head markings - primarily red, orange, blue and brown. On the other hand the Pyrrhuras are a much darker green, with scaled markings on the throat, nape and upper regions of the breast. Size does not vary so much between the various species, with the maximum length of 11 inches (28 cm)  and a minimum of 8 inches (20 cm.)
