Parrot Haven Aviary sunconures

Sun Conures

The sun Conure         (Aratinga solstitialis)

These beautiful Sun Conures are one of our breeding pair. Nearly 4 years old, they produced their first clutch last year 1998.

The cock bird "Sunny" is on the left and his mate and partner in conure production is called  "Bitch."  When she is in the breeding mode she is very territorial and an excellent guardian of her eggs, hence the name. Out of season she is a real delight.

Description

Physical Description

Their body is slender, and their feathers are bright iridescent shades of orange, blue, yellow, and green. The sun conures sometimes have a combination of these colours over most part of their body. The younger birds are more green, and their brighter colours appear after several molts. As with all conures, the Sun has the white skin patch around the eye. Average weight of 100g-120g.

Length

30 cm (12" ) in length, including their long tail.

Origin:

Northeast coast of South America.

Loudness

The sun conures natural call can be loud and raucous, and have a very loud scream when excited, this is further amplified if strangers approach their aviary.

Sexing

Indeterminable by appearance. Most breeders including us at Parrot Haven Aviary,  have their birds  surgically or DNA  tested for sexing.  However, you can take a guess by looking at the shape of the bird's head. Females have a rounder and smaller head than the male. The male's head is squarer, with a flatter forehead. Lots of luck.

Housing

Breeding aviaries need to be matched to the high level of activity displayed by these little bundles of dynamite. The suggested aviary/flight dimensions for them are: 0.9 metres wide, 3.0 metres long and 2.1 metres high.

For a companion bird, their cage should be no smaller than 0.5 metres wide, 0.5 metres high, and 0.9 metres deep. Something that is often overlooked, is the correct spacing of the bars in the cage. These need to be between 1.9 cm to 2.5 cm for conures, as they can get their neck caught between the bars if they are any further apart.

Breeding

They are physically capable of reproducing and raising young at the age of 2 years, though their first clutch is often infertile. On a whole they make a wonderful job of raising and feeding their young. Clutches usually consist of 4 to 5 eggs, with an incubation period of around 24 days and fledging around 50 days of age.

Trainability

The Suns are very playful and entertaining birds, and can be trained easily. Many breeders find the Sun to have a great playful personality.

Diet

A choice of any fruit and vegetable that are in season, these are cut up into small portions and feed daily. Their fresh feed dish must be removed at the end of each day, discarding the left over food scraps.  A thorough washing of the food dished in hot water, and washing up detergent before the next feed is also a must to prevent the spread of disease. We also disinfect the feed dishes every second day.
